Benchmark utilities |
| FakeBack.exe - (.ZIP file) Determines the best performance typical under read-only conditions. Since all backup systems must WRITE, backup performance will usually be lower than this number (consider at least 1/2). However, new advanced programs may use sophsticated multi-thread programming techniques or optimised drivers for IO and it is possible for these to equal, sometimes exceed FakeBack. Therefore, FakeBack is a good reference guide. If your backup program can do better than FakeBack, there's probably not much you can do to improve performance. This is a command line program. You can run it from the command prompt. There is no installation script, simply unzip and copy the .EXE to wherever you want to test from. Not all programs compute MegaBytes and GigaBytes the same. This program computes Kilobytes as 1024 bytes, MegaBytes as 1024 X 1024 bytes and GigaBytes as 1024 X 1024 X 1024 bytes. | |
| TRMark.exe - (.ZIP file) Transfer rate or throughput performance test. Determines the best typical read and write rates to a drive (device). File size is settable to bypass caching mechanisms. Backup performance will typically be less than these numbers if no compression is used. However, new advanced programs may use sophsticated multi-thread programming techniques or optimised drivers for IO and it is possible for these to equal, sometimes exceed TRMark. Therefore, TRMark is a good reference guide. If your backup program can do better than TRMark, there's probably not much you can do to improve performance. This is a command line program. You can run it from the command prompt. There is no installation script, simply unzip and copy the .EXE to wherever you want to test from. Not all programs compute MegaBytes and GigaBytes the same. This program by default computes Kilobytes as 1024 bytes, MegaBytes as 1024 X 1024 bytes and GigaBytes as 1024 X 1024 X 1024 bytes. But, you can switch to SI units with a commandline switch. | |

| HotSwap 2.0 - (LINK) HotSwap is a third party program which allows you to 'safely remove' an eSATA drive from Windows 2000. Use version 2.0, anything later does not support Windows 2000. This is a link. You must find and download the program on the page it points to. | |
| WhoLockMe - (LINK) This utility allows you to right click on a drive or folder and determine what process has locked the file. It is useful when you attempt to "safely remove" a drive and are told the file is in use. Often the culprit is explorer.exe. This is a link. You must find and download the program on the page it points to. | |
| Null BIOS Kit - (.ZIP file) This file contains the utility and flash files for nulling (erasing) the BIOS in the Silicon Image PCI, PCI-X and PCI-E controller cards. In some instances, the BIOS interferes with the main BIOS and prevents booting. Since the card ultimately uses a driver, the BIOS is only necessary on the card for booting and post check. Both a bootable floppy version and CD-ROM .ISO are in the file. Be sure to read the "README.TXT" file in
the directory of whichever boot method for reflashing you choose. Unzip on a new and separate directory before installing. | |
| VNC Remote Desktop - FOR TECHSUPPORT ONLY! - (.exe file) This file contains the VNC remote desktop software which we sometimes use when helping our customers. It allows us to control your desktop. |
| eSATA Driver uninstall reinstall script - (.zip file) This file contains a batch file and the devcon utility which you can use to uninstall and reinstall your eSATA card drivers with one command from the command line. Or, you make an icon to run it also. Occassionally for reasons the chip makers can not explain, on certain systems, eSATA drives will "pop" off-line. You can install these files in a directory of your choice and run the Rscan.bat file to uninstall and reinstall your eSATA drivers. THIS ONLY WORKS with Silicon Image chip based eSATA controller cards.Run from your command line. CAUTION! This script is not well tested and should only be used by technical or experienced users. | |
