Supplement to Tom's Hardware's "Bye, Bye Tape, Hello 5.3TB" review
April 17, 2007 We're grateful to Tom's Hardware for reviewing our 7 Bay Rackmount, eSATA High-Rely Disk to Disk backup solution with 7, 750GB Media trays in the article: "Bye, Bye Tape, Hello 5.3TB eSATA", by Julio Urquidi
Tom's Hardware is famous for its objective and in-depth technical analysis of computing and related hardware. We were very pleased with what the reviewer had to say about our product.
The following are corrections, further explanations and responses to some questions we have fielded by readers of the article.
- The reviewer was dissappointed that the HR system did not have redundant power supplies. However, the HR system is a "back up device" and as such is not necessarily mission critical. Many tape systems far more expensive than the HR system also lack redundant power supplies.
- Reviewer pointed out that only a small set of keys came with the unit. This was a good point and one we will correct in future orders. For existing customers, more keys are available by contacting our sales team.
- HRDM2 mentioned in the artical was actually pre beta and was not supplied to the reviewer with the HRDM2 Administrative front end which eliminates the need to edit the .INI file and performs many of the functions like serial number discovery automatically. At this time HRDM2 should be available by May 15.
- The reviewer rightly criticized us for having few web based resources. At the time the review was conducted, the HR website was under reconstruction. The current HR website is now much more robust than mentioned in the article and most of the resources we can offer are available directly for download without much trouble.
- Understandably, the reviewer desired more documentation of how to perform bare metal restores with the HR backup system. This is a difficult request to fulfill because the backup software used is up to the customer. Currently, HR does not supply or sell any backup software with the system. HR assumes you have or will have backup software you presently wish to use or continue using. Therefore, the possibilities of how to conduct a bare metal restore under the possible combinations of hardware and software create a daunting challenge to produce this kind of information. However, it is still our desire to provide this information to our customers so it is on our list of things to do as time permits. Keep checking our website "white papers" list to see when more issues of the "Bare Metal Chronicals" on these various configurations are available.
